William Preston and Allegheney Patriots is one in a series of indispensable works by Patricia Givens Johnson on the cultural development of the Shenandoah Valley. Though the reading can be a hard slog at time and Ms Johnson could have benefited from an energetic editor, the research is wide reaching and impeccably documented.
