Excerpt from Wilde's Summer Rose, or the Lament of the Captive: An Authentic Account of the Origin, Mystery and Explanation of Hon. R. H. Wilde's Alleged Plagiarism In presenting this volume to the public, we feel that we furnish nothing new to those who, during Mr. Wilde's lifetime, read the same vindication of him, in the periodi cals and newspapers of that day, and by the same friendly hand: But as the materials of the singular and interest ing controversy, respecting Mr. Wilde's claim to the authorship of The Summer Rose, lay scattered out of the reach of all except the industrious and favored few, it was believed that the collection and publication of these materials would not only subserve a literary purpose, but put into a condensed and authentic form, the origin, his tory and settlement of a controversy, which, at the time, excited deep interest, and which will hereafter and for ever associate the names of the two principal persons connected with it. The prefatory note of Mr. Barclay will show that the manuscript was not intended for the press; and the committee to whom the publication has been intrusted, take this method of returning to Mr. Barclay the thanks of the Society for his courteous permission to print it. Besides the narrative itself and the papers embraced in it, the committee have taken the liberty to print other papers having an intimate relation to the primary affair.
