Wilderness Champion has been around a long time and, although the story is timeless, the language and cultural attitudes are from a previous generation. Children who read and enjoy this are being exposed a little to language that may help them also understand older great literature. It is the sequel to another book, and as a child of 9 and 10, I loved this story, which I read and re-read many times. The author knew animals, hunting, terrain, etc., and created a story that communicated his knowledge of and passion for wildlife to the reader. When one finished reading this book, one was rooting for the wolf in a time when wolves were being systematically destroyed for their "evil" ways. However, the story did not make the wolves "nice" or tame. The hound in this second book survives with the wolves and, although this was/is very unusual, I learned a lot about animals through a very interesting story.
