Name derived from Lat. bis, double, and scutella, a salver or saucer, referring to the shape of the seed-vessels, which resemble two saucers side by side; levigata, smooth-podded, from levis, smooth. Is from about 10 to 16 inches in height, and grows on stony mountain sides. It is very abundant in the Bavarian Tyrol. Fl. May--July. It is not British. 2. DlANTHUS SUPEEBUS. (ElLLET SUPEBBE. PfiACHT Nelke. Named from Gr. Zeixs, gen. Jios (Dios), Jupiter, and avdos (anthos), a flower--The Divine Flower or Flower of God. A light, graceful, deliciously sweet mountain flower, with deeply cut fringed petals. It grows in great abundance on the Petit Cray, at Rossiniere, and is common in the Bavarian Highlands. Fl. July--September. It is not British. 3. Betonica Hiesuta. Stachys Densiflora (Benth.), Hairy Betony. Betoine Velue. Dichtbluthiger Ziest. Name derived from bentonic (Celtic), ben, head, and ton, good or tonic, its properties being cephalic; or name originally Vetonica, said to be from the Vettones, a people of Spain who discovered its reputed properties; hirsutus, rough, hairy. A handsome flower, about a foot in height, occasionally growing abundantly with the preceding, but it is a somewhat rare plant. Fl. July, August. It is not British. Another species, B. Officinalis, Wood Betony, is very different looking, having an interrupted spike of smallish flowers, i. e. crowded whorls of flowers, with a bare stem intervening. It belongs to lower elevations, and is a British plant, growing in clearings of woods and with heather.
