Interesting read...misses the point of Christianit
This is an interesting read; certainly heartfelt to be sure from author John. W. Loftus.
The difficulty is that John seems to have little to no real understanding of just exactly what makes someone a Christian.
Most "ex-Christians" will vehemently tell you that they WERE once a Christian, but are no longer. In fact, most have not only left Christianity, but have firmly embraced atheism.
The trouble is that it readily appears the definition of being a Christian used by these "ex-Christians" is based on the outward; which is not at all biblical. They completely leave out anything resembling a "spiritual transaction" that the Bible says takes place when by faith, we receive Christ as Savior. Most of these "ex-Christians" simply ignore the biblical meaning of being a Christian.
They say they went to church, read the Bible, prayed, etc., (and I have no doubt that they did), and some will even say they prayed the "sinner's prayer," however to arrive at the point where they are now at, is completely incongruent with the teaching of the Bible.
John spends a good amount of time attempting to exegete (interpret) Scripture, but the attempts are full of holes and are easily handled. In fact, some of the charges against Scripture and individuals like Luke (wrote Acts and Luke), are embarrassing to actually have to deal with, due to the ease with which they are handled.
The praise of men listed at the beginning of John's book reads like a "Who's Who of Atheism" and of course, it is one platitude after another. Then again, what would one expect from another atheist?
There are also a few praises from well known Christian scholars, which certainly mean more to me than the self-aggrandizing praise of atheists.
I'm hopeful for those who read this book that they can keep an open mind, which is what I started out with. I also hope the eyes of "ex-Christians" will be opened to see the problem with their own current "testimony."
