Excerpt from White-Tailed Deer in Eastern Ecosystems: Implications for Management and Research in National Parks The issues of deer and vegetation and their management in the national parks of the eastern United States are of enormous ecological and social complexity. These issues present challenges no less difficult than those of elk and vegetation in the western United States. In recognition of this complexity, the National Park Service (nps) commissioned a series of field studies to learn about deer and vegetation through original research. The National Park Service also commissioned several reviews to provide park staff with greater access to this knowledge. This report is one product of those efforts. What we know about deer and vegetation is examined, with the intent of clarifying the issues and thinking about them in an ecosystem context. Much of our scientific understanding of deer and vegetation is based on detailed studies, with an emphasis on statistical technique. This review attempts to minimize detail and focus on the take home messages from the research and on their application to management. This document is written for the National Park Service as background material for evaluating management alternatives. While this report is intended primarily for managers and administrators, we expect that many people concerned about parks will find this material useful.
