Stegner is a western writer. One of the best. Not cowboys and Indians western writer but a writer from the west who writes about western landscapes, western writers and about growing up west of the 100th meridian.
This book is a series of short stories about people and places along with some personal stories. The book's strength lies in the first half, especially vignettes about the Southwest landscape; and few do that part of the country justice as does Stegner.
The missing fifth star is the result of the latter half of the book where he writes about western writers; mostly because I missed his excellent descriptions and stories about the landscape. Yet I must admit a couple of his western-writer snippets I found interesting, since they did contain his spot-on insight. I even discovered several new writers that are now favorites.
All in all, I did love this book and will likely reread several stories in the future; not something I typically make a habit of doing.

If you love the West..........
Stegner discusses the writings of several authors, including some of his own, adding some latter-day musings on them and directing you to the truth about the current west and its history.
The letter to Wendell Berry was one of the most remarkable things I ever read, and it set the tone for some things I need to say to a few peole.

A Western Writer
Wallace Stegner was one of those writer that I always meant to read; but never got around to it. I understood that he was a Western writer of some sort and I like the genre; but it was only when I read "Where the Bluebird Sings to the Lemon Grass. . ." that I realized he is a writer who was born and grew up in the West and not the traditional writer in the style of ZaneGrey or Louis L'Amour. I quite enjoyed this series of essays spread over a broad period of time on a variety of different topics. It was a good introduction to the man and his work. Much of the writing is autobiographical and he has many comments about what writing meant to him and how he learned the craft of writing. They are all thoughtful, interesting essays, very well written. I highly recommend the book as an introduction to the man as writer. Now, I have just recently ordered his most famous opus "Angle of Repose" through Alibris of course and am looking forward to receiving it in the mail to open its first page on that rainy day.
