In 1889 the U.S. Steamer Thetis left the port of San Francisco and cruised the coast of Alaska. This epic journey was launched to rescue shipwrecked sailors and assert U.S. sovereignty over the newly acquired territory. The result was some of the earliest photographs of Alaska ever made.
