The Flashing Lights' debut CD is a fresh and mostly lighthearted album full of brisk pop songs with heart-on-my-sleeve vocals and dreamy harmonies. Where the Change Is stays focused and energetic throughout its 13 songs -- from the vibrant title track opener and the summery "Where Do the Days Go?" to the gee-whiz sentiment of "Highschool" and the immediately hummable "Day Like That." "Talk to the Hand" is as angry as the sensitive and thoughtful Lights get, "The Patient You Forgot to See" is a fun pity party track, and "Elevature" has a great Thrush Hermit-like riff (and a guitar solo). "The Unattached" is a swirling and sunny tune with an underlying sense of dread, and "Gone Are the Good Times" is a yearning, contemplative closer. With lyrics ranging from simple to simplistic (but always charming), the Flashing Lights contemplate relationships with a hopelessly romantic -- if not always optimistic -- perspective.
