It includes accounts of a Mediterranean pleasure cruise, of the coronation of the Emperor Haile Selassie in Abyssinia in 1930 and of the Italian invasion five years later, of visits to Aden and Brazil. These early accounts of journeys made to remote places at a time when Waugh "had no fixed home and no possessions which would not conveniently go on a porter's barrow" reveal the merciless eye and sharp wit which were to characterize his novels - "Decline and Fall", "Scoop", "A Handful of Dust" and "Brideshead Revisited".
