Girls also are largely responsible for the use of tobacco by young men, and I am sorry to say, that girls themselves sometimes smoke cigarettes, thinking it funny; whereas if they really knew the poisonous effect of tobacco, they certainly would not use it themselves, nor countenance its use in others. Boys get an idea that smoking is manly, but if they were made to feel that girls thought less of them when they smoke, it would have a great influence upon them, I am sure. I was once talking with a young preacher who smoked. "I know it is a bad habit," he said, " and I'd like to quit it, but there are too many temptations. Why, even the Christian girls will say, 'Oh, do smoke, Mr. H.; I like the odor of a good cigar, ' and what is a poor fellow to do under such circumstances. Girls have no right to encourage us in a bad habit," he added with emphasis. "I tell you," he continued, "if you want us to quit smoking, just get the girls to oppose it, and we will stop, I assure you. Girls can have just what they want as far as young men are concerned." Even the little girl may have an opinion and, by her expression of it when occasion requires, may help some boy to give up tobacco. Of course, it would not be becoming for you to try to instruct older men, or take them to task for a bad habit, but if one should ask your opinion, you ought to express it politely and have a scientific reason to give why you hold such an opinion.
