Excerpt from What I Saw on the Old Santa Fe Trail: A Condensed Story of Frontier Life Half a Century Ago What I have written in this series of articles is the plain truth. I doubt if a man could be found living today who crossed the plains on the old Santa Fe road in as early day as I. Some of the facts recorded here have never been recorded in any history of Kansas or any account of the old road. There can never again be a repetition of the scenes. There will never again be great caravans of prairie schooners slowly wending their way across the great American desert. The old Santa Fe road is almost obliterated. Cities and towns have sprung up. Dwellings, school houses and churches decorate the prairie. Horace Greely crossed the plains six years later than I. In his comments he said: There were more buffalo in sight than there are cattle in Illinois. So I offer no other reason for this personal history of pioneer days. Seller's Description:
Very Good-with no dust jacket. This scarce and fragile little item recounts the author's trip on the Santa Fe Trail in 1854. From the title page: "Caravans of Prairie Schooners, Forty Wagons, 500 Oxen, Millions of Buffaloes, Thousands of Wild Horses, Antelopes, Big Gray Wolves and Cayotes, Prairie Dog Towns and Jack Rabbits, Rattle Snakes, Lizards and Centepedes, Savage Indians and Mexicans, Strange Sights Crossing the Desert." Also contains the author's early memories of Kansas, slavery, etc. as well as the Kaw Agency and the Indian Mission, "Kansas Troubles" and the Beginning of the Civil War. In original publisher's black wrappers with gilt lettering (which is now dulled). Upper left corner of front wrapper chipped, and bottom 1 inch of spine is perished. Front end paper has small previous owner stamp on front end paper, "Orton Taylor, Pawhuska, Oklahoma" (that end paper missing the top front corner). Three pages have a little light staining, the rest are generally clean and bright. Last page has a tiny piece missing from bottom and two pages before that have pin prick hole at the same location. In all, this is an acceptable copy of a scarce and desireable item. Ref: Howes L384, ; 3 portraits; 8vo, 8"-9" tall; 127 pages.
