I purchased this book to give to my nieces, ages 2 and 5, when their great-grandmother died. "Grandma" had lived with them all their lives, so their loss was deep and experienced daily. This book explains death in a very quiet and calm manner and takes children through a "remembering" of the death, the feelings of loss and anger, the funeral and the days after the funeral, and then continues into the future as it were, with the child character growing up and still remembering and honoring her grandma in her actions (In this plot, the child grows up to bake cookies, just like she and Grandma had done, including the special way Grandma and child had shared a cookie from each batch). I thought the book would be a gentle way for my nieces to remember the special times they had shared with their grandma. I hope it will be a book they can return to as they grow older and want to remember in new ways. There are some slight Christian references, primarily about going to church for the funeral. I believe this book also graciously covers a distinction between body and spirit, where the spirit consists of all that we remember of a person, and a body can 'wear out and get old'. (Words are not exact -- I do not have the book in front of me.)
