There can be no pardon, justification, adoption, without the gift of sanctifying grace. And thus sanctification may be referred to the Father,1 to the Son,2 and to the Holy Ghost.3 The Father works through the Son and Spirit, the Son through the Spirit. "If any man be in Christ, he is a new creature.' Christ is made unto us sanctification as well as redemption.4 The Holy Spirit, however, is always represented as the chief Agent in the work. He implanted, Ho fosters the new life. Chiefly does He act by means of the Word.5 He moulds the will to right and pure desires; He guides the thoughts into the truth; He regulates and controls the affections. His presence is an invisible power, a supernatural grace. Its results are progressive, --must we not say, often fluctuating?--but, so far as they extend, the source of all right feelings and good works, and heaven begun below.
