Seller's Description:
Unamed. Good. A late nineteenth century copy of this historical novel, 'Westward Ho' by Charles Kingsley. With a portrait frontispiece of Charles Kingsley. Westward Ho! is based on the adventures of the Elizabethan corsair Amyas Preston. He is given the name Amyas Leigh for the purposes of the novel. It follows his sailings to the New World with Sir Francis Drake and Sir Walter Raleigh where they battle with the Spanish. The work of historical fiction celebrates England's victories over Spain in the Elizabethan era. A prominent theme is the common 16th century fear of Catholic domination, reflected by Kingsley's own dislike of Catholicism. Charles Kingsley was a broad Church priest for the Church of England. He was also a historian, social reformer and novelist. In a half calf binding with cloth covered boards. Externally, sound with patches of slight rubbing to the head and tail of spine and to the extremities. Some heavy damp staining to both the front and rear board, more so to the front board. This has resulted in a small loss to the bottom of the front board and to the cloth. Patches of mould due to the damp staining to the endpapers as well as some damage to the bottom margin of the first and last few pages. This does not affect the text. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright though slightly cockled due to the damp staining. The odd spot throughout. Good.
