We Were There at the Opening of the Erie Canal
This book details the life of a young teen as he travels on and helps with the construction of the Erie Canal. It is an interesting account of life in the early 1800s in New York state. The book presents African-Americans in a realistic, but positive light. After reading this book, I want to travel to New York and visit the Erie Canal historic sights! Very little objectionable content (there is some fighting) and appealing to both male and female readers.
