The title is deceptive. Though all the best early Vibrators tracks do appear here, from "Baby Baby" to "London Girls," these are not the famous, original 1977-1978 zippy punk versions. Instead, these 16 tracks are made up of 1991 re-recordings, 1977 demos, and live renditions from a 1977 London Marquee gig. On the other hand, those who were searching for a real best-of probably already found one of the greatest-hits collections that have already emerged, such as 1980's Batteries Included (issued on import when they initially split) or the reissued original LPs: 1977's Pure Mania and 1978's V2. The demos are rough and ready, and the in-concert looks at the exceptional "I Need a Slave," "Stiff Little Fingers" (an early B-side from which the Irish greats took their name), and "Whips and Furs" make this a viable purchase. Vintage U.K. punk was rarely this fun, funny, amphetamine-silly, and riffing-perfect, and it comes back in these versions. ~ Jack Rabid, Rovi
