This classic memoir of the 1920s brilliantly recreates an extraordinary era, when 'The Young' danced all night - determined, in the pursuit of pleasure, to forget the deprivation, the horror and the misery, of the recent FirstWorld War. The dancing only ended with the dawn, and as the Bright Young Things celebrated, there, in the thick of it, was Barbara Cartland, her energy and vivacity epitomising that of a generation. Her friends were the influential, the beautiful and the talented - among them the pioneers of the exciting new developments of the twenties: motoring, flying, wireless. In this dazzling book she captures all the energy, dash and charm of those exciting, carefree years.

This unexpectedly good autobiography from the author, Barbara Cartland, was a very pleasant surprise. Unexpected, in the sense that I never cared to read (after the age of 12) anything written by Barbara Cartland, author of hundreds of simple, slim romance novels, all of which which ended with a kiss. But this autobiography is anything but simple -- it's insightful; with plenty of good anecdotes about the famous and socially prominent people of the 1920's-1930's era. The late Ms. Cartland may have given the impression of being a lightweight, thanks to her romance novels, but this autobiography shows another side of her that is very revealing and interesting. As well, it is a fine social history of British high society in the 1920's. I recommend it highly.
