But I see evil growing and attaining unexampled proportions; and if Fenelon, in the middle of the 17th century, was able to discern the approach of the French Revolution, and exclaim, 'Adesse festinant temporal surely when I see the rising tide I may be allowed to feel some emotion. I say it deliberately. I have passed through very evil days, but I have never beheld such threatening appearances as now surround us on erery side. I have in these latter times heard an outburst of irreligion such as I have not heard before.... The most giddy and unreflecting amongst us can surely not avoid casting a glance on the calamities that fill us with consternation. But a little while ago war was desolating two great countries. Did we not apprehend it ourselves? and at the present time, in despite of treaties of peace, are we not beset by rumors of war? Do ye not see on every side peoples resorting, without delay, to formidable armaments, to engines of destruction unknown to the past, so that the most murderous inventions succeed each other with feverish emulation, and advance simultaneoiisly with the progress of mankind? And whilst the calamities of war were pouncing down upon two powerful nations, a still more terrible scourge--pestilence, the cholera--was, nay, still is, pursuing its mysterious path of havoc through the principal countries in Europe.
