Enjoyed book very much. Was a change from the Roman series of books which are fantastic but this was just as exciting and fast moving.

first-rate historical fiction
This book's central organizing conceit - the parallel narratives of Washington, the so-called 'Father of his country' and Caesar, a slave - is interesting, but the real power here comes from Cameron's huge abilities as a writer of historical fiction just across the board: the alternating chapters on Caesar are brutally honest on the subject of what slavery was really like in the era of the American Revolution, and the chapters on Washington are not only the best historical fiction about that notoriously elusive character ("The Man from Mount Vernon" runs a close second) but some of the best fiction about the Revolution ever written. Cameron has a dead-perfect ear for dialog and a masterful knack for set-pieces (some of his scenes will stick with you long after you read the book). This is a powerful and intelligent piece of historical fiction.
