Excerpt: ...and will furnish the country with a bountiful supply of lumber for ages to come; but it was stated in a recent forestry congress that the white pine, spruce, birch and tamarack are being destroyed so fast that soon none will be left that have any commercial value. Professor Little, of Canada, estimates that the supply of merchantable white pine in the Lower British Provinces, will be used up in five years, and he asserts if the waste of forest continues to go on at the present rate, the time will come when it will cost more than all our exports of grain and cotton bring to supply the United States with timber for building and repairing purposes. Our only relief in 1900 will be the magnificent forests of the Puget Sound country. What a tremenduous activity there will be in a comparatively limited area when the bulk of all the vast lumbering enterprises of the country are concentrated in the Pacific Northwest! The contemplation of such a change will soon set many a mill man to figuring. Those who now plant themselves in the Puget Sound forests have an outlook for prosperity that few others in the same business can hope to equal. TIIF. PRECIOUS METALS. The mining of gold and silver in Washington Territory is in its infancy, but enough is already known of several districts to warrant the assertion that the commonwealth will soon be as famous for its mineral resources as for its forests. Precious metal mining is thus far confined to the region east of the Cascade Mountains. There are four prominent districts--Colville, Kettle River, Salmon River and the group of camps surrounding Ellensburg.
