Excerpt from Wakeman Genealogy, 1630-1899: Being a History of the Descendants of Samuel Wakeman, of Hartford, Conn;, And of John Wakeman, Treasurer of New Haven Colony, With a Few Collaterals Included This genealogy is offered to the family with a feeling that it is very far short Of what a good and complete history of the family Should be; and while some of the statistical omissions are owing to a lack of ability on the part of the author to procure them from various records, a part of this is owing to loss or the destruction of records of churches or towns, and of valuable papers belonging to earlier members of the family; a notable case being the burning a very few years ago of pamphlets and papers that formerly belonged to the Rev. Samuel Wakeman by a New York city teacher, to whom they descended. These papers, etc would have sold for considerable money. The scattering of our family in nearly every state of the Union, many moving and leaving little or no clew, has been another Obstacle.
