This work offers the first detailed account of Lev Vygotsky's theories and their relationship to Russian and Western intellectual culture in the 20th century. Vygotsky, a contemporary of Freud and Piaget, lived from 1896 to 1934, and his work was, until recently, only known to a small circle of Western psychologists. It is now viewed as having made a substantial contribution to the theory of 20th century social science. This biography on his life, his psychological theory of language, thought and development also considers the influence of his ideas since his death.
