T Tpon a wild and sounding shore, Where stormy waves beat high, There sat a Queen, and, what is more, A Saint condemn'd to die The rose had vanish'd from her cheek, But heavenly lustre shed, Speaking as nought of earth can speak, A glory round her head. And fair and floating were her locks, And white her lily hand Contrasted with the sombre rocks And the dunes of driving sand. She sat apart--she will'd it so--The salt spray damp'd her hair, And sea-weed breezes faint and low Came drifting past her chair. Watching her ebbing spirit's strife, The people stood apart, That lov'd her for her saintly life, And the goodness of her heart. They watched her as a mother's eye Watches a dying child; When she breath'd in pain no cheek was dry And when she smil'd, they smil'd. And day by day, the little birds Flew pleasantly to greet, And in small showers settle down And twitter at her feet. They look'd into her friendly face, And they were not afraid; And without etiquette or place A mimic court they made. They perch'd in flocks upon her chair, They had perhaps no claim; They knew not why they nestled there, But they lov'd her, and they came. Yet the curse of Courts was in the air, So lightly folly comes, They quarrell'd for the chiefest share, And fought for largest crumbs. And it did her good to watch their strife, And all their little ways; She had seen enough of it in life, Where there was less to praise. One morn they sought the wonted spot, Bright sunbeams warm'd the air; They waited--but their Queen came not, And empty was her chair; And silent was the sandy lea, And silent all the shore, Save the moaning of the restless sea, And the wild surge's roar.
