Canyon Records has been producing recordings of traditional and contemporary Native American music for 50 years. This compilation is the fifth of its kind in the label's history. It is a varied and uneven collection of music from Canyon releases. There are some big names in the field here. Label heavy-hitter R. Carlos Nakai appears on two tracks, as does Robert Tree Cody. Sharon Burch, Delphine Tsinajinnie, and powwow stars the Black Lodge Singers also contribute tracks. Multiculturalism and pan-tribalism are the orders of the day on this release. Flutist Cody combines his talents with flamenco guitarist Ruben Romero and percussionist Tony Redhouse on "Encuentro" from their Native Flamenco CD. It's a sensitive combining of two historically conflicting cultures. Cody and Huichol musician Xavier Quijas Yxayotl's "Crossroads" is one of the most colorful tracks on the disc and one of the most successful blendings of cultures. Nakai and Tibetan flutist Nawang Khechog combine forces with guitarist William Eaton and percussionist Will Clipman for the pensive and airy "Aspen Wind." Nakai's string-drenched "Song for the Morning Star" falls a little flat, however, treading dangerously close to Muzak. You could also skip past Sharon Burch's cloying, cliché-ridden "We Are Here." There are many better songs encouraging environmental awareness than this one. On the traditional side, Delphine Tsinajinnie's "Cheii Littleben's Line Dance Song" is a fine vehicle for her strong, expressive voice. The Black Lodge Singers show why they are one of the most in-demand powwow groups on the circuit with their powerful "Traditional Song." As a sampling of what's going on in First Nations music, Voices Across the Canyon works most of the time. ~ Peggy Latkovich, Rovi
