This splendid book was a companion to an equally absorbing PBS TV series. Although seriously dated in terms of New World wines and the "future" of the wine world, this is undoubtedly a real masterpiece of prose, research, scholarship, and wit. Eloquently written, the book traces viniculture from its ancient origins to the modern era, focusing on the geographical, social and cultural, and even technical or scientific contexts. This is an extraordinarily good book that is well worth reading.
