Narrated in the first person like the author's better-known Jane Eyre, Villette leaves me wondering why it is not better known. Lucy Snowe is poor, plain, friendless, and fiercely independent. The world in which she moves, as a teacher in a foreign girls' school, is certainly described and commented on with great power. But it is the inner life she describes, emotions, impressions, convictions, depression - and unrequited love - that is most convincing. Almost anguishing to read, it seems that Charlotte Bronte must have experienced Lucy's feelings to depict them so minutely. Very absorbing read. Very satisfying aesthetically, too. If Charlotte Bronte painted pictures instead of writing novels, Villette would be a sparkling watercolour, with delicate colours and minute detail - whereas Jane Eyre would no doubt be painted passionately with broader strokes and earthy colours. Both wonderful, you understand - just different. Very enjoyable.
