This reprint of the third book in Nichols' Allways trilogy contains a new foreword by Bryan Connon, Beverley Nichols' biographer. Set in the English countryside, the hilarious memoir is as much about the author's love for plants as it is about the village in which he lived. The depictions of flowers and ornamentals -- A single one of those gloxinias would be an event in Allways ... I should give a party for it -- are both inspiring and unforgettable. This is the voice of one whose chief endowment is an appreciation for plants and the landscape, including a keen understanding of the importance gardens play in an increasingly modern world.

Seller's Description:
Rex Whistler. Good in Good Only jacket. A first edition of this idyllic children's story set in the countryside. Found in the original dust wrapper. A first edition of this illustrated children's story by John Beverley Nichols. Found in the price clipped dustwrapper. As well as writing fiction, theatre scripts, and childrens books, Nichols also wrote non-fiction works on travel, politics, religion, and parapsychology, and contributed to many magazines throughout his life. However, he is best remembered for his works about homes and gardens, such as Down the Garden Path which is illustrated by the same artist as the present volume, Rex Whistler. The author's love of gardens is evident in this story set in the countryside. In the publisher's original blue cloth binding, found in the price clipped dust wrapper. Externally, generally smart. Lightly rubbed to the boards and the spine, with some light bumping to the tail of the spine. Missing a little wrap to the head and tail of the spine, as well as the top edge of the front board. The wrap is rather grubby to the rear board. Aside from some light foxing to the endpapers, pages are bright and clean. Good.
