Excerpt from View of Holliston in Its First Century: A Century Sermon, Delivered in Holliston, Mass., December 4, 1826 It. Was certainly an important object, with this now established community, to promote its growth in population and wealth by holding out every possible encouragement to emigrants. And yet, desirable as the inhabitants doubtless, felt it to be, we find them early adopting and prosecuting measures to guard against the introduction of a mixed and corrupt population;-at one time, rais ing monies to encourage and aid the removal of certain French families to Canada; and at others, expelling immoral and licentious individuals and families, that had crept into their territory, and were polluting their soil, iby the rigour of law. We notice this as forming a peculiar and interest ing feature in the character and acts of the primi tive inhabitants of this place; and as constituting an important basis for the subsequent character and prosperity of the town.
