In many ways the photography of Questar videos of Egypt is better than that produced by more well known documentary producers. The opening reflection of silhouetted palm trees is magnificent. The focus lingers long enough on the scenes and monuments for you to really see the details, many closeups and angles surpassing what you could see in person. But this is not a slow moving or boring travel movie--I frequently had the urge to pause the movie to savor a scene that whizzed by at a lively pace.
Clips of contemporary Egyptian life in the market provide an immediate taste of Egypt, equally valuable for a virtual visit or a refresher course for faded experiences. Modern life is counter balanced with Pharaonic Village scenes offering glimpses of ancient lifestyles. Live footage includes aerials, archaeologists at work, tomb and temple scenes. From desert to the Mediterranean, a visual feast invites you back for replaying in conjunction with or in lieu of travel.
DVD extras include two other Questar documentaries on the pyramids and ancient cities enhanced by illustrations of gods, maps and digitally recreated monuments. Fascinating video scenery of people, monuments and landscapes summarize what can be seen only in Egypt. Conversely, lament the colorful local houses in Qurna, on the hillside outside the Valley of the Kings, that can be seen only in movies now that they have been bulldozed and their people relocated.
