Excerpt from Vetusta Monumenta, Vol. 3: Quae Ad Rerum Britannicarum Memoriam Conservandam Societas Antiquariorum Londini Sumptu Suo Edenda Curavit I S the feal of margaret queen of Scotland, oil a letter to her brother king henry the Eighth; dated April the eleventh, 1513, and preferved in the Cottonian library'. Queen margaret was the eldefl daughter of king henry the Seventh (by elizabeth his wife, daughter of king edward the Fourth), and was born November the twenty-ninth, 1 489; at the age offourteen (he was efpoufed to james the Fourth, king ofscotland; her portion was ten thoufand pounds, and herjointure per annum (he was condufted to Edinburgh with great pomp and the marriage was confummated there in Auguf'r, 1503 from this match proceeded the union of the two crow'ns, an event which her father forefaw might happen, for he Obfe'rved at the council-board, previous to the treaty for the marriage, that in cafe of failure of heirs male in his own line, England worild not be an ac ceffion to Scotland, but Scotland to England. King james the Fourth was killed at the battle of Flodden Field, A. D. 1513. In the courfe of the next year (he was married to ar???i-iiba'ld douglas, earl' of Angus, much to the diifatisfa???lion of her brother and the council of Scot land; but diflurbances arifing in that kingdom [he and her bulband took refuge in England, and were kindly received by king henry the Eighth; {he returned to Scotland in June; 1517. Her children by king james the Fourth, her firll hufband, were james, who died in his infancy; arthur, who died in 15 10. James the Fifth, king of Scotland, the third fon, who was born at Linlithgow in April, 1512, and was crowned at Scone in 1513. Alexander stuart, duke of Rothfay, born after his father's death, in 1514, died young. By her fecond hulband (he had an only daughter named margaret, who was heir to her hither; born at Harbottle Caflle in Northumberland, in 15 I5 (he efpoufed matthew stuart, earl of Lenox, and regent Of Scotland. Their fon henry, lord Darnley, married mary queen of scots, l and they had iffue king james the Sixth of Scotland, and Pirfi of England. The unicorn in her lap was one of the royal badges of king james the Third, who {truck gold coins called unicorns, and half unicorns 5.
