Bei Lenz wirkten ethische Grillen mit dem Zorn ???ber Recensionen im Teutschen Merkur zusammen. Zwar muss er selbst gestehen, es sei ihm glimpflich begegnet worden: die Anzeige der Lust spiele nach dem Plautus (september 1774, S. 355 f.) und des "hofmeisters (ebenda S. 356 - 8) sind vor wiegend sehr g???nstig; auch Der neue Mohoza (november 1774) konnte leicht viel ???bler fahren, und in der scharfen Recension des g???ttingischen Almanachs (januar 1776, S. 86) finden die "kleinsten Schnitzen aus Goethes oder Lenzens Brieftasche neben Klopstock und Claudius ihr Platzrecht. Der Verfasser des "leidenden Weibes, Klinger, wird freilich (august 1775, S. 177) ein Nachahmer Lenzens genannt mit dem Zusatz: "der Nachahmungssucht schreibe ich auch die unartigen Aus f???lle zu, die der r???stige Knabe auf Wieland gothan. Die "unterredungen zwischen W** und dem Pfarrer zu deren Abwehr des Vorwurfs, Wieland stelle gewisse Laster verf???hrerisch reizend dar, Lenz selbst sp???ter anerkennt, erschienen vom April 1775 an, also gerad in der Zeit, wo Lenz den m???rderischen Kampf betrieb. Ihre ???berlegnen Worte gegen den redlichen, die Tugend mit Enthusiasmus liebenden J???ngling Voss (s. Ausspr???che wie dieser: dass "ein junger un erfahrner Neuling in der Welt unm???glich ein Sokrates seyu kann (s. 83) samt der Wendung von "unreifen muthwilligen Jungen, die sich zu Richtern aufwerfen waren nicht danach angethan, den Ehrgeiz und die Neus???chtigkeit eines Herolds der vorr???ckenden Gene ration alsbald zu d???mpfen.
