Illustrated with an engraved frontisportrait of Matthew Vassar, and numerous in-text vignettes. Affected by moderate foxing throughout the text. Ex-libris, with institutional discard label on the inside front cover, a remnant of a check-out label on the rear endpaper, four small numerals on a page of preface, and minor call number removal evidence at the bottom of the spine. First edition, with the ornate gilt stamped "V" on the front cover bright, crisp and attractive.

Bound in green embossed pebbled fabric with embellished floral "VC" on the front cover and gilt spine, spine gilt faded but still readable, foredges gilt all around. A nice, clean, tight and attractive book.

Lossing was a charter trustee of Vassar College. Signed presentation from Lossing on the front endpaper: "Miss Van [Amaning? ], with the compliments of Benson J. Lossing. Dec. 19, 1878." With the ink name of "Louise McVey" penned beneath the presentation. Lacks the frontispiece of Matthew Vassar (included in the List of Illustrations) but, after checking a number of different copies, it appears that this portrait was left out in all copies published. Bookplate of Fanny Lee Weyant on the front pastedown. Very Good (little wear to spine tips & more to lower corners of covers; several small spots of dampstaining to upper corner of rear cover with a little transferred to the upper corner of the rear endpaper; contents clean & tight). An uncommon title and difficult to locate a signed copy! $275.00.
