This Norwegian did not establish his reputation as one of the great jazz accordionists just by showing up. He seems to have impeccable taste in his projects through the years, creating among much other documentation a series of superb jazz albums for Columbia back in the days when such a recording would be released with a title such as Martini Time. Not that the folks tilting back martinis would notice, but an accordion player fronting a jazz group has to make sure the instrumentation compliments the unique but in some ways limited sound of his instrument, as well as foster a certain type of dynamic interaction that also favors the squeezebox. All the ingredients are in place here. The drummer and bass player keep flawless time, sometimes manic and sometimes relaxed -- whatever the song demands. The leader's choice of material is first-class, sophisticated, and deluxe, a keen eye and ear on the art of song craftsmanship, with of course the jazz soloist's taste in stimulating chord progressions. The choice of guitar and vibraphone for the other main soloists is of course the right one; these are also lighter-sounding instruments that tend to get tromped on by some of the other artillery in the jazz armory. This is an extremely satisfying recording in which one won't find any glaring musical vaults or misfires. ~ Eugene Chadbourne, Rovi
