Here, Pereira again demonstrates that the best gentleness comes from strength: While the overall feel of Valsas Brasilieras is relaxing and tender, his mastery of the instrument and itsharmonic possibilities lifts the music out of the "ear candy" category into something direct and profound. The selections range from classic tunes of old Rio -- "Eponina" and "Manhas de Sol," including the dazzling "Desavairada" or "Insane" by Anibal Augusto Sardinha "Garoto," a father of modern Brazilian guitar -- to works by more contemporary giants like Jobim, Edu Lobo, Chico Buarque, and Vinicius de Moraes, and relative newcomers like Guinga. Pereira also contributes two fine originals, the haunting "Marta" and "Plainte." While the entire selection is superb, the album peaks with the cascading poignancy of "Eu Te Amo," the sheer artistry of"Manhas de Sol," the thoughtful "Emotiva No. 1," and Pereira's intricate, achingly lovely version of what many consider to be Jobim's most beautiful song, "Luiza"; it ends with a lively virtuoso performance of "Valsa Negra."
