In his Symphony No. 6 in two movements from 1947 and his Symphony No. 7 in one movement, Holmboe's technique of symphonic metamorphosis can only be compared to Ockeghem, Bach, or Webern in terms of density, intensity, and expressivity. In this 1993 BIS recording by Owain Arwel Hughes and the Århus Symphony Orchestra, Holmboe's Sixth and Seventh are as vividly and brilliantly realized as it is possible to imagine.
