Excerpt from Upon a Method of Teaching Language: To a Very Young Congenitally Deaf Child This boy was only about five years old when his education was commenced, and the results obtained in his case during the first two years indicate that the education of congenitally deaf children might profitably be commenced at home, and that they might even acquire a vernacular knowledge of English - at least in its written form - before being sent to school. The value of early home training in language cannot be overestimated. Our pupils, as a rule, do not enter school until after the age when children most readily acquire language. If they could commence their school course with even an imperfect and rudimentary knowledge of English, the labor of the teacher would be enormously reduced and the progress of the pupil immensely accelerated.
