Too bad Dick died in his prime, no telling where he would take us in his continuing exploration of identity and perception, both within and without our individual pysche. This final edition of his early work, Unteleported Man, is the last attempt by Dick to see the complete manuscript of this novel published in its entirety. It had been previously published as a severely edited short story. Unfortunately he died before finishing the recovery of his work leaving several pages missing. Even in this earlier work he shows the propensity for drawing us into one world only to have it disolve into another, and then another until we are left considering where reality exists. The path into confusion begins mundanely enough as a simple almost obviously predictible science fiction story. But that is the trap of Dick. You think you know where it is going until he hits you with the alternate world of the characters, transforming the apparent plot into a complex and unverifiable world. I found it a little too ambigous as to the "paraworlds" for my taste, but a good idea for illustrating the alternative worlds of modern quantum therory on a parallel universe existing in multiple dimensions. I prefer his more worldly, A Scanner Darkly aka the Duplicated Man, which deals with the confused identity of a deep uncover drug agent. At least there you can comprehend the reality in our normal day to day experience.
