In 1969 at the age of 28 I was first introduced to "The Hobbit" over dinner with a good friend. In the space of three hours she related a synopsis of the story line and its relation to the history of Europe during that period, the depth of the author's religious convictions, and the employment of the "biblical" definitions of good and evil without explicit reference to religion. In comparison to the book...well, I wouldn't try to begin to make a comparison.
I thought this was going to be another in-depth review of J.R.R. Tolkien's "hobbitry"; I couldn't have been more mistaken. In addition, the format was "time-line historical", the review was pieces of the story line, and the minimal explanations poorly written.
The book gave the impression of a tenth grader's book review that had to be completed over the Thanksgiving holiday.
