Singer/actresses Emily Skinner and Alice Ripley were cast as Siamese twins in the Broadway musical Side Show, which earned them a mutual Tony Award nomination even though the show failed. In 1998, they made an album together, Duets, on which they resurrected a cut song from Side Show and sang film and theater songs written for two women, such as "I Know Him So Well" from Chess and "If Momma Was Married" from Gypsy. That release was successful enough to earn this follow-up, for which they still were able to find plenty of material. Of the 15 tracks, nine are duets, with each singer taking three solos. Again, there is a cut song from Side Show, Ripley's "She's Gone," while the title song comes from an even more famous Broadway flop, the musical version of Carrie, in its premiere recording. Skinner admits that she is auditioning for a proposed revival of A Little Night Music with her rendition of "The Miller's Son," but there are other potential casting calls here, including Ripley's premiere of "Losing Track of Time" from an in-progress stage adaptation of Summer of '42, and Skinner's "My White Knight" from The Music Man and "I Don't Know How to Love Him" from Jesus Christ Superstar, both scheduled for spring 2000 Broadway revivals. The singers demonstrate that they are musical comedy stars with inspired performances of Cole Porter's "Friendship" from DuBarry Was a Lady, and theater buffs will delight in Skinner's performance of "The Alto's Lament," which complains about the lack of recognition for harmony singers by demonstrating the unadorned harmony parts of well-known theater songs. There is also a hidden track at the end that finds the singers trying to make a demo tape of songs from West Side Story for a potential production in London. Based on these performances, they could be cast in any show they want. ~ William Ruhlmann, Rovi
