Vidal was not a great novelist-- his best book was the superb but uncharacteristic historical novel, "Julian," about the 4th century emperor, and most of the rest of his novels were superficial or tedious, or both. But he vies with Updike (also overrated as a novelist) as our most distinguished man of letters. These essays make that point very well.
