This is the first album by young Boston guitarist Adam James Wilson and his quintet. His interest in microtonality and the use of non-standard tunings and temperaments give his compositions (which actually sound often more like structured improvisations) a special flavor while retaining something of that Boston spirit found in the music of Joe Maneri and his son, Mat Maneri. The spirit of the latter is especially present in violinist Katt Hernandez's playing. Her languid bowing will eventually require a more personal touch if she doesn't want to follow the younger Maneri's footsteps, but it works superbly in this particular ensemble. Drummer Aaron Trant shifts between freestyle ramshackle, straightforward beats, and something sneaking in between, thus evoking Masashi Harada (another Boston teacher). Compare and trace teachers' influences back if you want to, what remains in the end is a fresh-sounding quintet nonetheless, with loads of talent to spare. Listening skills are high and the interplay between flutist Arto Artinian, Hernandez, and Wilson -- who plays a fretless electric guitar like he was Jimi Hendrix reincarnated after hearing Joe Morris play -- is more often than not fascinating to "watch"; the trio section in "The Slow Crucible" ranks as a highlight, so do the raucous "Unify" and "Under Your Thumb." To reach such a level of perfection for a group of musicians averaging 27 years of age is an accomplishment by itself. Hearing the unspoken promises this disc reveals -- there lies the real treat. Recommended. ~ François Couture, Rovi
