As Good As It Gets
This book fills in an important niche of uniform history and reference. It gains a better rating than it would have if there were any competing references, just because it is unique. Jill Halcomb is a careful researcher and authority. This volume suffers only from a lack of source material. Virtually everyone in the Third Reich was entitled to wear some kind of uniform. The Diplomatic, Government General and Eastern Territories Ministry uniforms were distinctive but not a popular subject for collectors. The rank insignia for the Government General uniforms is not well illustrated or explained. Hans Frank is shown wearing sleeve insignia which does not correspond to his apparent rank, or at least this is not explained. Part of the difficulty is the limitation of black and white only photos which make identifying Diplomatic uniforms from Government General uniforms very difficult. That's one example.
If you are looking for straigtforward rank tables and illustrations for each department, you will be disappointed.
Still, it's something and if you are trying to identify or reconstruct a display, it's all you have to go on and no one else can authoritatively critique your effort without the book.
