Autobiography of a remarkable US author and playwright whose lover was Dashiell Hamnett-and whose friends included Dorothy Parker, Hemingway, Scott Fitzerald and Norman Mailer. In Spain during the Civil War, she was later invited by a Russian general to follow the 'Red' advance on Berlin in 1945, and stood up against the McCarthyite witch-hunts of '50s America. Her book 'Pentimento', about her friendship with anti-Nazi activist 'Julia' has been more recently challenged for its accuracy and honesty, but she was an extraordinary woman and writer nonetheless.
