The more I become acquainted with the British public, the more I feel convinced Of the inadequacy of its knowledge of the prevailing state of affairs in the Empire of the Czars, and of the bearing Of this upon European Politics and Economics. Though 'several valu able works have recently appeared on the subject, still it seemed to me, that my own humble story may not be void Of general interest, touching, as it does, on some aspects of modern life, especially of religious movements in Russia, but little treated Of before in any English publication.
