Seller's Description:
Very Good. No Jacket As Issued. 12mo. --Four & 3/4-inch x Seven & 1/2-inch; Early reprint, published approximately 1899; missing date on title page indicates this is not a first printing. Green cloth covered boards with wear to edges, darkening/dust stains. Gold lettering on spine & front panel, and black lettering & illustrations on same. Textblock edges heavily darkened by dust stains/foxing. Previous owner's bookplate affixed front pastedown & non-authorial inscription inked front free end page. The protective glassine sheet bound-in between frontispiece & title page is torn. There are 12 plates with A.B. Frost illustrations (including frontispiece, 'Uncle Remus...Sniffing the air'). This is a quote from page 258 according to the caption, but in fact it is page 259. Could be a error reprinted from the orginal first edition/first printing. Yet, I suggest the one page difference might be due to a page count change from the first printing and this one, but it is impossible to tell. In fact I have seen this same issue described as if it was a first/first online. Nevertheless, according to Zempel's 'First Editions: a guide to identification' (Spoon River Press, 3rd edition, 1995), page 213, this is not a First Edition/First Printing. This is backed up by the list Books by Joel Chandler Harris listed with this copy of of 'Uncle Reus and his friends'; there are several titles published after 1892, the most recent being 'Plantation Pageants' (1899).
