Gerry and Stella Gilmore--a retired Irish couple living in Scotland--have decided to spend a long weekend in Amsterdam looking for a change of air. Their seemingly pleasant and safe relationship goes by thanks to a peaceful routine, but Gerry has a serious problem with alcohol and he drinks himself to sleep thinking that Stella is unaware of the graveness of his addiction. She just tolerates it discreetly, as she does with his whims and with what she perceives as a lack of sensitivity and concern for her. But as they spend the weekend together, the distance that separates them grows more apparent and they start to feel that it maybe it is already too late. With this novel, Bernard MacLaverty shows enormous ambition with the depth of his meticulous investigation of emotions, which is why he is considered one of today's best Irish writers.
