First published in 1903 "Two Centuries of Costume" has retained its place in American social history for almost three quarters of a century as one of the most reliable and readable of studies on the way early Americans clothed themselves. At the time Alice Morse Earle authored this work she was already well known as one of the country's leading social historians. She had written numerous studies on varied aspects of early American life, she lectured widely and was possibly the foremost specialist in American antiques at that time. She was in demand throughout the East as an interpreter of the life styles of the colonials. These two volumes were a natural outcome of her wide-ranging research into the way people of this country lived in the 17th and 18th centuries. In her historical writings Mrs. Earle was one of the first to concentrate solely on the cultural and social aspects of a historical period. This noted study on costume covers the entire range of fashion for men, women and children through two centuries of continuous change. It is an absolute mine of little known but fascinating and frequently startling information on clothing styles and materials, on long-forgotten items of human dress, on customs and manners, jewelry and decoration, batts and broags, boots and shoes, perukes and periwigs-the list is a lengthy one. Hundreds of contemporary illustrations provide a clear picture of the item under discussion and the way it was worn at the time. Few volumes can provide so intimate a look at our early societies in such entertaining and insightful a fashion. "Two Centuries of Costume in America" is a source of basic information for the student as well as the general reader. It has yet to be supplanted.
