Joseph Brady Mitchell (September 25, 1915-February 17, 1993) was an American military historian. He served for 18 years in the U.S. Army and achieved the rank of lieutenant colonel. Col. Mitchell served in the Army for 18 years before retiring from active duty. He then was a historian with the American Battle Monuments Commission. From 1963 until retiring in the mid-1970s, he was curator of the Fort Ward Museum in Alexandria. He was the author of six volumes of military history and had contributed articles to magazines, historical journals and encyclopedias. His books included "Decisive Battles of the Civil War, " and "Military Leaders of the Civil War". His other volumes included a revision of Edward Creasy's classic "Fifteen Decisive Battles of the World." In 1964, American historian Lt. Col. Joseph B. Mitchell published Twenty Decisive Battles of the World, an update of Creasy's list with five additions: The Vicksburg Campaign, 1863. By capturing the Mississippi River during the American Civil War, the Union separated the Confederacy into halves. Battle of Sadowa, 1866. This Prussian victory over the Austrians during the Seven Weeks War paved the way for a German empire. First Battle of the Marne, 1914. The British and French prevented a German assault on Paris and an early German victory in World War I. Battle of Midway, 1942.
