Steve Dahl celebrates 20 years in radio with the release of Twenty Years in the Can, a four-CD collection of bits taken (for the most part) from broadcast tapes. Starting in the '70s with his first job in California as "The Kid," to his short stint in Detroit, and on to Chicago with his dozen or so characters known as "And Company," the individual bits are given perspective from Dahl himself in both the liner notes and spoken introductions to the pieces. Then it's on to his long partnership with Garry Meier and their years in syndication (unheard of at the time). The set then documents the dissolution of the Dahl/Meier partnership and the subsequent downward spiral of Dahl's career, bottoming in a short stint in sports radio. Dahl got things back on track in 1996 with the explosion of talk radio, and has been going strong since (webcasting at www.dahl.com). He even collaborated with Brian Wilson on "Your Imagination." Those hoping to hear all of Dahl's great song parodies will be slightly disappointed; most are represented in medley form only, although there are a few full-length tracks. Steve Dahl has certainly had his audacious moments, but he was never really a shock jock as they came to be known in the late '90s. Even so, for a guy with his reputation, the range of emotions elicited by the pieces is surprising, although the emphasis is, of course, on laughs. This set will be a trip down memory lane for many, and is an enjoyable chronicle of the career of one of FM rock radio's real groundbreakers, although a four-CD set is obviously for the already converted. ~ Sean Westergaard, Rovi
